Converse All-Stars

Classic Chuck Taylor's

Produced since 1917, Converse All-Stars are the most popular sports shoe in the world.  Many people refer to All-Stars as “Chuck Taylor’s.”  The shoes’ namesake is best known for being a basketball player, a well-known fixture in the American sports community and the sneaker’s biggest salesman from the 1920s-1960s.  Taylor, whose signature is on the ankle patch, suggested a few design changes and wore white high-tops, but never received a commission payment from Converse.

Until 1966, All-Stars were available in either the high-top or low-top version and only in black and white.  Nowadays the shoe can be found in a rainbow of colors, patterns and materials.

Off the court, Chuck Taylor’s have always been popular with youth, beginning in the 1950s.  Since that time, the young-at-heart everywhere have favored the shoe for a casual street style. Globally, people are devotees of the shoes. Perhaps the biggest fan of all is Joshua Miller of Washington State, who holds the Guinness World Record for owning 680 pairs!

The Famous Patch

Bobby Socks

Bobby Socks Are a Cool Place to Keep Your Comb

Bobby socks are all-American socks that are created when white, elasticized, calf-length socks are turned down when worn.  Bobby socks can be plain or with lace, bows or any other decoration.

Bobby socks were first worn by women in the US during the pre-war years but became most popular in the 1940s and 50s, when young women and girls wore them with saddle oxfords or penny loafers. Frankie Avalon even had a hit song in 1959 called “Bobby Socks to Stockings.”  Since that time, girls in the US have continued to this day to wear bobby socks with school uniforms and cheerleader outfits.

Saddle Oxfords a.k.a. Saddle Shoes

After seeing Betty Lou’s saddle oxfords, I was inspired to write about the history and interesting facts of one of my favorite classic American shoes…

Considered to be the grandfather of modern athletic footwear, saddle oxfords are one of the few all-American shoes.  Also known as saddle shoes, saddle oxfords were first introduced in 1906 for tennis and squash players. The first saddle oxfords were manufactured by Spalding, which is the company who also made the first basketball, baseball and American football.

Saddle oxfords are distinguished by their oxford, lace-up style and are made of leather with red clay-colored rubber soles.  They are usually one color at the front and heel with a contrasting “saddle” piece over the middle which supports the instep during sport.  The shoes were originally made in white with a contrasting black piece, however they can be made in any combination of colors.

My Spalding Saddle Oxfords

In the 1950s, almost every American girl had a pair of saddle oxfords in white with black “saddles,” which they often wore with bobby socks. The shoe continued to be popular with teenage girls, cheerleaders and preppies from the 1960s-80s. Nowadays, people seen wearing saddle oxfords are usually golfers, children, preppy men, people dressed in 1950s fashions and vintage aficionados.

Saddle Oxfords Were All the Rage in the 1950s

Truly Americana Music: The Drive-By Truckers

The Drive-By Truckers is probably one of the best American roots rock bands around today. Their music is sometimes humorous, sometimes haunting and always honest about America & specifically the Deep South–their home & mine.

They blend arena rock-style guitars, with country twangs and mix in a little alternative rock to create a style of music that pays homage to the heritage of great American music. But it’s the stories in the songs that make people come back for more.

They’ve got a new album out called The Big To-Do which you may want to check out.  But their earlier work is worth a listen as well. Southern Rock Opera which recieved 4 stars from Rolling Stone, weaves the double-albums’ song topics through the filter of Lynyrd Skynyrd.  But my personal favorites are Pizza Deliverance and Gangstabilly which are among the band’s first releases.

No matter what you sample of their work, the Drive-By Truckers will surely give you a bit of Southern soul explanation & inspiration…plus, it’ll make you want to kick back & drink a cold one!

Verkligen Amerikansk Rotrockband: The Drive-By Truckers

DBT singing a dark song about my & their home (Lookout Mountain) at my & their other home that’s dark (40Watt Club in Athens, Georgia)

DBT har ett nytt album ute “The Big To-Do” som du kanske vill kolla in.
