Boy Scout Shirts for Non-Members: Alright or All Wrong?

It is a controversy, but after all, it’s old news…vintage, if you like.

Several years ago, Destiny’s Child showed up at the Kid’s Choice Awards in Boy Scout uniforms tailored to fit the ladies in all the right places.

The Boy Scouts of America organization didn’t like it one bit. Officials informed the band’s management that BSA uniforms were only to be worn by members. Destiny’s Child were certainly “on their honor” by sending an apology letter to the organization

We never thought those cute uniform shirts were to be taken so seriously!  They are a snazzy fashion statement after all.

So we have to ask y’all, dear readers: Boy Scout Shirts for non-members: Alright or All Wrong? Cast your votes in the comments.

Boy, Do We Need Scouting

The international scout Jamboree is in Sweden this week.  We’ve have had the pleasure of  meeting lots of scouts who have visited us at Gamla Brogatan.

Inspired by the scouts visit to Sweden, we thought we’d show this vintage Boy Scouts of America TV commercial featuring Hollywood star Christian Slater in his younger years.

After Slater’s multiple run-ins with the law, “Boy, Did HE Need Scouting!”

Barbra Streisand: A Collector of Vintage Clothing

Barbra Streisand’s Vintage Clothing Collection

Barbra Streisand, the American superstar of screen, stage and song, continues to grow and develop as an artist through her curation and collection of Art Nouveau furniture and vintage clothing.  In her first book, My Passion for Design, she offers a lavishly illustrated personal tour of her home and collections.

Although the book focuses mainly on the design of her homes, it shows a glimpse into the development of her sense of style, and what collecting vintage clothing has come to mean to this American legend.

Tommy Hilfiger

American Designer Tommy Hilfiger

The Tommy Hilfiger brand for women, men, children and home projects a spirit of the American dream, with a youthful, carefree twist.  All Tommy Hilfiger products bear the company’s undeniably American red white and blue logo.

Tommy Hilfiger at People's Place in the 1970s

The company’s namesake started his first clothing business by selling used blue jeans from his parents’ basement in upstate New York.  Over time, Hilfiger built up this business to seven outlets of People’s Place which sold jeans, clothing, incense and posters.

After People’s Place went bankrupt because of poor management, Hilfiger moved to Manhattan to try to make it as a fashion designer. He soon landed a spot as a designer for Jordache jeans.  In 1984, Murjani, the manufacturer of Gloria Vanderbilt designer jeans, invited Hilfiger to design a younger preppy look, along the lines of Ralph Lauren, which would have mass appeal. Murjani spent a lot on a brash marketing campaign, securing Hilfiger’s brand name on par with Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Perry Ellis. The clever advertising turned Tommy Hilfiger from an unknown into a top American designer of casual, youthful preppy-inspired clothing.

Tommy Hilfiger Prep Style

In the 1990s, Hilfiger became a Wall Street darling with increased earnings and capital to expand operations into retail stores and women’s and children’s lines.  Also during the 90s, the Hilfiger look gained street cred with hip hop stars and urban youth giving the preppy look a new twist in large sizes and eclectic color and pattern mixes.  Tommy Hilfiger continues to experiment and expand the brand and its marketing to sustain its mass-market appeal.

Ralph Lauren

American Fashion Designer Ralph Lauren

Born Ralph Lifschitz in the Bronx, New York, Ralph Lauren was always interested in fine clothing and style.  From a young age, Ralph worked odd jobs so that he could buy new clothes.  In his high school yearbook, he stated under his picture that his wish was to be a millionaire.

After attending business college and serving in the U.S. Army, Ralph Lauren worked at Brooks Brothers as a tie salesman.  With no formal training in fashion design, he opened his own necktie specialty store in 1967, selling ties of his own design under the brand “Polo.”  Shortly thereafter, he began making a menswear and women’s wear line under the Polo label.  In 1972, Lauren released the now–famous Polo short sleeve mesh shirt with the Polo logo, which is a modern American classic.

From the 1970s until today, Ralph Lauren has continued to expand his signature lines as well as the Polo brand.  He has also expanded retail operations with sales in major department stores and boutiques, as well as 35 company-owned stored throughout the United States.  During these 40 years, Ralph Lauren has secured his place as the quintessential American designer with unparalleled success and recognition of the brand worldwide.
