Started in 1830 by English immigrant John Rich, Woolrich is one of America’s quality outdoor clothing brands. Rich began producing wool & wool products in Plum Run, Pennsylvania and sold his goods to men working in nearby lumber camps. Later, in 1845, Woolrich built a new mill next to a reliable water source, and quickly the community grew into Woolrich, Pennsylvania, home of the company’s headquarters today.
Over the years, Woolrich has kept up with society’s changing needs for clothing, producing lumberjack clothes, golf knickers, wool bathing suits, hunting clothes and robes worn by drivers during the early days of the automobile. Woolrich even claims to have been the first company to use a zipper in men’s trousers.
Like many other classic work and outdoor brands, Woolrich has been a long-time contractor of the U.S. Government. During the Civil War, the company was commissioned to make blankets for Union soldiers. In the early 1940s, the U.S. government contracted Woolrich to outfit Admiral Byrd on his expeditions to Antarctica.
Today the company concentrates on producing high-performance outdoor wear, as well as maintaining an emphasis on its legendary items. Enduring classics still produced by the company today include the railroad vest and the buffalo check shirt.
