Uniform Work Shirts

By the cut and style of uniform work shirts, it’s not surprising that they have thier origins in military clothing.

After World War II, many of the G.I.’s coming home needed a sturdy and casual shirt to work in their new civilian jobs.  To fill this need, former soldiers would wear their old military shirts, which fit the bill for being well-made for hard labor, comfortable and not too fancy to mess up in their work environments.

As the trend spread, clothing manufacturers caught onto the need these blue-collar workers had and began making uniform shirts specifically for civilian jobs.  The shirts took inspiration for their tailoring and materials from military uniform shirts.  However, rank and division patches were replaced with the company’s insignia and the name of the worker.

To this day, vintage work shirts are a casual and sometimes ironic look for any urban hipster wanting to play tribute to America’s blue-collar workers.  Classics such as Red Kap, Dickies and Big Ben as well as newer brands such as Cintas, Aramark, Unitog and Flying Cross dominate the American market in uniform work shirts.
