Sticking With The Classics

Do you think the rugged heritage look is something new for this season?  Well, think again!

This article appeared in TIME magazine in 1976 describing how outdoor clothing and traditional work wear became fashionable for the urban set back then:

via Time.com - TIME Magazine - November 29, 1976

Again in September 2010, the heritage look was dissected by The Wall Street Journal:

That’s what we’re all about here at AMERICANA.

Sticking with the classics, which will always be in fashion…anytime…anywhere.

L.L. Bean

L.L. Bean is based in Freeport, Maine and was founded in 1912 by its namesake Leon Leonwood (L.L.) Bean.  The company started out by making the famous rubber-bottomed and leather-upper Maine Hunting Shoe.  Later, L.L. Bean expanded to an outdoor hunting and fishing outfitter and generated business in the northeastern United States from its mail-order catalog.  Today, the brand is synonymous with quintessential American outdoor style.

Boat & Tote Bags

Although the company still continues to generate most of its business through catalog and online orders, the company maintains a 24-hour, 365 days-a-year flagship store in Freeport, Maine as well as additional stores throughout the eastern United States and one in Japan.  The flagship store in Maine has been described in The Preppy Handbook as “nothing less than a prep Mecca.”

The company claims to carry over 20,000 products, but some of its most famous items are the Maine Hunting Shoe, Camp Mocs and Blucher Moccasins, the Norwegian Fisherman Sweater and the Boat and Tote Bag. Since 1912, the company has had a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee policy that allows the customer to return anything at anytime if they are not completely satisfied.

My American Hometown Shoe Store

This is the first installment in a series about the people, places & things from my recent trip to America…

In just about every small town in America, there’s a little shoe store that carries quality brands for local customers. Many of these shoe stores are a family business that have been serving generations.

I guess I’m lucky because where I come from, our local family-run shoe store is Sears Shoe Store in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.

This store has nothing to do with Sears, the big American department store chain.  Rather, it’s owned by the Sears family who have been shoeing people of the Tennessee Valley for decades.  My grandparents shopped there for work shoes as well as “Sunday shoes,” my parents still shop there, and when I’m in the States, I shop there for myself and my children.

Sears is chock full of all kinds of quality footwear goodness for men, women & children, representing the best brands from the United States as well as fashion brands known around the world.

The thing I love most about Sears is that you can always find dead stock somewhere in their cavernous maze of shoes.  If you ask the staff, they can pull just about anything out of their floor-to-ceiling stacks of shoes.

This includes vintage baby shoes, ladies heels from the 1960s or, as I asked for & got on a recent visit, a pair of white Converse All-Star high tops that were Made in U.S.A. It is also exactly the place I knew I could find a very rare pair of Spalding Saddle Oxfords, which are now one of my most prized pair of shoes.

Sears is a local legend.  But for me personally  it’s a constant treasure trove of dead stock classic vintage finds and the source for all the best Made in America shoes.

Abercrombie & Fitch

A&F Moose

Abercrombie & Fitch is a fashionable casual-wear retailer in the United States with over 300 locations.  The brand is synomous with quitessential American youth and has been described as “neo-preppy”.  The company is well-known by the public through their trademark “Casual Luxury” and the “A&F Moose.”  A&F’s most popular items include printed t-shirts and sweatshirts, jeans and casual pants.

Abercrombie & Fitch was founded New York City in 1892 by David Abercrombie as an excursion and sporting goods outfitter.  One of the early regular customers was a lawyer named Ezra Fitch, who later partnered with the founder.  Together in 1904, the two established the company under the name it is known today.

Abercrombie & Fitch Outfitted Charles Lindbergh in 1927

Early well-known customers include President Theodore Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Ernest Hemmingway, John Steinbeck and Katherine Hepburn.  The company also outfitted Charles Lindbergh for the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.  In those days, well-outfitted outdoorsmen were referred to as  “Abercrombie & Fitchermen.”

In 1988, the company was purchased by The Limited, who changed the sporting outfitter’s image to the fashion youth brand as it is known today.
