Bib overalls are usually made of denim or heavy cotton duck cloth with riveted pockets. They are characterized as trousers with a bib front which is fastened to the wearer by braces which go over the back and shoulders.

The term “overalls” first appeared in the 18th century and was defined as “worn outside the normal trousers to protect them.” Traditionally, overalls were worn with red union suits, long underwear or flannel shirts in colder weather and with a t-shirt or shirtless in warm temperatures. Today, bib overalls continue to be used as a worker’s garment, but are equally worn as an item of fashion.

The Americans were the first to use overalls as part of a military uniform during the American Revolution. One of the first uses of the term “overalls” was in the uniform

regulations of the American militia, whereas linen would be used for summer and wool for winter. Levi Strauss & Co. began producing denim overalls in the late-19th century, which was the predecessor to modern-day Levi’s jeans.

In the 20th century, mechanics, miners, farmers, painters, railroad workers, tradesmen, and even women and children began to wear bib overalls. During that time, overalls came to be most commonly associated with rural men and boys in the American Midwest and South.

Since the 1960s, overalls have been modernized by making them in different patterns and colors and are worn today by all sexes and ages. One of the earliest hip-hop styles of the 1980s was traditional or modern overalls worn with one of the straps unfastened.
