Introduced around 1905 by Levi Strauss, the denim jacket was created to be worn with jeans by outdoor workers of the time. Lumberjacks, miners and cowboys liked the jacket because of its warmth, comfort and durability.

Blue Bell

In 1897, native Tennessean C.C. Hudson left his home in Williamson County to work in the emerging textile mills of North Carolina. After his workplace closed down in 1904, he and a few of the other workers got together to form the Hudson Overall Company on South Elm Street in Greensboro, North Carolina.  After a while, the business grew with a following of laborers and railroad workers as its main clients.

Legend has it that a group of customers gave Hudson a bell, which became covered in blue denim dust, and the name of the company was changed to “Blue Bell Overall Company.” In 1936, Blue Bell introduced “Super Big Ben Overalls” made of 100% Sanforized fabric that reduced shrinkage to less than 1% after washing.  This set a new standard for the denim industry and firmly put Blue Bell on the work-wear map.

In the 1940s, Blue Bell began to make denim jeans for cowboys and from that the “Wrangler” western wear line was born.  Today, the company continues to be known as Wrangler, but those who respect the heritage of the brand continue to refer to its Blue Bell roots.

Dear Friends,
Since our arrival a short time ago to Sweden, we’ve had the fortunate opportunity to meet many of you who have a passion for denim. We have learned a lot during our discussions with you and in every instance have wished to continue the conversation.

With so many of us passionate for denim in one place, we feel that there should be a home where we can all come together on a regular basis to discuss our shared passion for the world’s most beloved fabric.

Whether it’s to learn more from each other, to show and tell about new or old vintage pieces or just to simply network with like-minded souls, we at AMERICANA Classic Vintage endeavor to weave together these exclusive evenings for all things denim.

On November 3rd at 7:30 p.m. we’re gathering together for the first time. Mats Andersson and Johan Söderlund of Indigofera will be sharing their thoughts on denim, followed by snacks and drinks from Gray’s American Stores! Plus, all our guests will receive a 20% discount off everything in the store during the event.

Bib Overalls

Key: "The Aristocrat of Overalls"

Bib overalls are usually made of denim or heavy cotton duck cloth with riveted pockets.  They are characterized as trousers with a bib front which is fastened to the wearer by braces which go over the back and shoulders.

The term “overalls” first appeared in the 18th century and was defined as “worn outside the normal trousers to protect them.”  Traditionally, overalls were worn with red union suits, long underwear or flannel shirts in colder weather and with a t-shirt or shirtless in warm temperatures.  Today, bib overalls continue to be used as a worker’s garment, but are equally worn as an item of fashion.

The Americans were the first to use overalls as part of a military uniform during the American Revolution.  One of the first uses of the term “overalls” was in the uniform

regulations of the American militia, whereas linen would be used for summer and wool for winter.  Levi Strauss & Co. began producing denim overalls in the late-19th century, which was the predecessor to modern-day Levi’s jeans.

In the 20th century, mechanics, miners, farmers, painters, railroad workers, tradesmen, and even women and children began to wear bib overalls.  During that time, overalls came to be most commonly associated with rural men and boys in the American Midwest and South.

Bib Overalls: Timeless American Work Wear

Since the 1960s, overalls have been modernized by making them in different patterns and colors and are worn today by all sexes and ages.  One of the earliest hip-hop styles of the 1980s was traditional or modern overalls worn with one of the straps unfastened.

Bib overalls are super comfortable, whether worn at play or at work and are always a classic item of American clothing.  Famous American brands include Liberty, with its patented bib, Carhartt, Pointer, Round House, Red Kap, Osh Kosh, Big Smith, Walls,  Big Mac by JC Penney, Roebucks by Sears and Key “The Aristocrat of Overalls,” just to name a few.

Americana Has All The Famous Brands, Including Big Smith
