Pendleton Wool Is Woven Into America’s History

Founded in 1863, Pendleton has been family-run business for six generations.  Since the company’s beginnings, it has produced almost all of its Indian blankets and clothing in the Pacific Northwest.

Although Pendleton first made blankets for trade with Native Americans, they have been producing wool shirts since 1924. For nearly a century, Pendleton has used the same size yarn to produce Umatilla wool that comes from the same sheep at Cunningham Ranch and other local farms in Oregon and Washington.

The Beach Boys (a.k.a. The Pendletones)

Pendleton gained widespread fame through surfers and California pop music.  When the Beach Boys first got together in 1961, the band was called the Pendletones.  Pendleton Woolen Mill sent the band a letter advising them they could not use the name. So the Beach Boys were born.  Later, in 1963, the band wore matching Pendleton shirts for the album cover for “Surfer Girl.”

Pendleton

Pendleton Shirt from Americana

Since 1909, Pendleton Woolen Mills have been weaving fabric at the original mill in Pendleton, Oregon, near Portland.  Starting from weaving Indian blankets for trading from the Pacific Northwest to the Southwest, the company sources wool from local ranches to produce quality, classic, American items from “fleece to fashion.”  It is a privately-owned, sixth generation family business with manufacturing facilities in Oregon, Washington and Nebraska.

In 1924, the company expanded its line from Indian blankets to create the colorful plaid Pendleton wool shirt. During World War II, the company devoted most of its time to military production.  After the War, Pendleton introduced the 49er jacket and the pleated skirt, which both became a rage in fashion at the time and are still produced by the company today.  In the 1960s, the Pendleton “Umatilla wool” shirt was favored by surfers and the surf-pop group named the “Pendletones” later changed their name to “The Beach Boys.”

Pendleton Indian Blankets

Pendleton’s products are coveted by their owners because the company controls the entire process of production.  Pendleton wools are expertly dyed so that the colors do not fade.  The company also cuts its products from the same bolts of fabric to create consistency in color and pattern. Meticulous attention continues in assembling garments with matching collar points, patterns and finish work. This attention to detail makes every item produced by the company “Warranted To Be A Pendleton,” as each label proclaims.
